Planting an Olive Tree of Peace from Palestine
Friday 9th May: 5.30pm – meeting behind the University of Manchester Students Union

Last year the University of Manchester Students Union, with an overwhelming majority, voted to accept the invitation to plant an Olive Tree by An-Najah University. This was part of the twinning between both the Manchester and An-Najah Student’s Unions.

The twinning with An-Najah has had a huge profile and been of a great success in supporting a Palestinian’s right to education. This summer several Manchester Students are visiting An-Najah and studying there as part of the twinning. Some of the twinning activities have included debates held over video link and articles from An-Najah which are published in Manchester Student Direct. The campaign has been a vibrant and lively one which has involved many students.

===============================================
Last year our students’ union voted to support the right to education for Palestinians and to twin with An-Najah University in the West Bank city of Nablus. Palestinian education has been severely hindered by blanket curfews, roadblocks, the Apartheid Wall and frequent assassinations and arrests of students and teachers. The cumulative effects of these measures have put the future of many Palestinian universities at grave risk.

The twinning has been vibrant, with debates held over web link, articles from An-Najah students published in student direct here and a few Manchester students making the journey to Palestine it really has felt like the two students’ unions are twinned.

The 9th-16th Nov is the 5th International Week of Action against the Apartheid Wall called for by the Palestinian Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign and since then endorsed by various movements, groups, networks, and international civil society conferences.

Our union has decided to run this “Solidarity with Palestine Week” to coincide with the International Week of Action against the Apartheid Wall; to join in this struggle in order to put to words into action, to make rhetoric into reality for the Palestinian people in their struggle for Freedom and Justice amidst the Israeli plans of bantustanization and expulsion.
